Virginia Warwick

Virginia Warwick (August 26, 1902 - July 27, 1988) was an American silent film actress.

Early Life[]

Virginia Warwick Depp was born in Kirkwood, Missouri, on August 26, 1902. [1] [2] [3] She was raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Her father, John Henry Depp (1860-1936), was a bookkeeper. Her mother, Ida W. Depp née Simpson (1864-1941), was a homemaker. [4] Her parents were married on December 10, 1884. [5] She had two elder siblings; Samuel S. Depp (1885-1901)[6], who died at the age of 15 one year before her birth; and Olivia W. Depp (1888-1977).

Virginia received her early education in St. Louis. Following her family's move to California, she attended a high school in Los Angeles where she studied classical dance and participated in dancing and basketball. [7] Pursuing her dream of becoming an actress, she drop out of a high school before finishing it.

Film Career[]

In 1918, Virginia Warwick became one of Mack Sennett's bathing beauties and was photographed with well known bathing beauties such as Marie Prevost, Phyllis Haver and Harriet Hammond. [8] After leaving Mack Sennett, she starred in five comedic shorts that were made between 1919 and 1920.

She was casted in her first dramatic role in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse where she play Chi-Chí, the sister of Julio Desnoyers, played by Rudolph Valentino. Her performance in the movie was praised by Rex Ingram and June Mathis because of her acting ability in drama. [9]

Following the success of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, she was casted on her first western film Hands Off! that year. Between 1922 and 1923, she was starred in films such as Go Get 'em Gates, Boomerang Justice and A Good Scout. She was offered a role to play in The American Toreador by Morris R. Schlank, which she did. [10] That same latter year, she file a lawsuit against Virginia Helen Warrick for using her stage name by changing because it would affects the former's acting career that could led the former losing job. [11] [12]

She made eight films, such as Speed King, Ace of Cactus Range and Reckless Speed, in between 1923 and 1924. Following her marriage to Jimmie Adams in October that latter year, she continued her film career mainly in the western and drama genre by starring in films such as South of the Equator, Wild West and Desperate Games. In 1926, she made two final films before retiring to devoting herself to Jimmie Adams, her husband.

Personal Life and Death[]

Virginia Warwick was married twice. On October 10, 1924, she married Jimmie Adams, an actor and comedian, at her house in Hollywood. [13] [14] She remained married to him for nine years until his death from myocardial infarction on December 19, 1933. [15]

After Jimmie Adams' death, she went on to marry Harrison Henry Rhoads, an automobile dealer, and live with him in Los Angeles. [16] She and Harrison were moving to Rancho Mirage where they were reside in. On September 13, 1974, Harrison Henry Rhoads died. [17]

Virginia Warwick Rhoads died on July 27, 1988, at the Desert Hospital, Palm Springs, California, at the age of 85. [18] [19]
